Nearly 5,000 migrants from Central America, Venezuela, Cuba and Haiti walked from Mexico’s southern border north toward the United States.
Migrants complained that refugee and exit visa processing was taking too long at the main migrant processing center in the city of Tapachula, near the border with Guatemala.
In Mexico’s overburdened immigration system, people seeking these types of visas often have to wait weeks or months without being able to work.
On Monday, migrants formed a long line along the highway.
From time to time they were accompanied by the police, who usually intervene to prevent people from blocking the road and sometimes to prevent them from hitchhiking.
The march was one of the largest since June 2022.
The migrant caravans in 2018-2019 attracted much more attention. But with up to 10,000 migrants showing up at the US border in recent weeks, Monday’s march could be considered a drop in the ocean.
