Argentina will not join the emerging BRICS bloc next year as planned, a senior official on President-elect Javier Miley’s team said.
“We will not join the BRICS,” said Diana Mondino on the social network
Libertarian Miley harshly criticized China during the election campaign and threatened to break diplomatic relations with Beijing.
In an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, Miley said, “I’m not dealing with any communists.”
China is one of the key members of the BRICS along with Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa.
Argentina was one of six countries invited to join the bloc in August. It was expected to become a member of BRICS on January 1, 2024.
Previously, Mondino tried to downplay the BRICS.
“The BRICS are more about political alignment than the advantages they can provide in trade between countries,” he said in an interview two weeks ago.
Earlier this week, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met with the president-elect of Argentina to discuss the importance of continuing to develop a strong relationship between the United States and Argentina, the White House said.
The relationship could evolve “on economic fronts, as well as on shared priorities such as investing in technology and clean energy, protecting human rights, and defending democracies around the world,” the White House said in a statement.
“National Security Advisor Sullivan congratulated President-elect Miley on her election victory and expressed his commitment to continuing close cooperation between the two countries,” the White House said.
