US President Joe Biden highlighted the “strong international coordination” his administration is putting in place to stop the flow of fentanyl and the ingredients used to make the deadly drug.
“We are focused on prevention, harm reduction, treatment and recovery,” he said at a White House meeting on the illegal drug, which has killed more than 200,000 Americans in recent years.
“But this problem has roots beyond our borders, beyond the borders of the United States,” he added.
Biden has promised to step up his administration’s anti-drug efforts after reaching deals with Beijing and Mexico City last week on the sidelines of the APEC summit in San Francisco.
Fentanyl is mass produced in Mexico using chemical precursors from China and shipped to the United States via cartels.
“This is a global problem that requires global action,” Biden said.
