US President Joe Biden held a telephone conversation with King Abdullah of Jordan, during which they discussed events in the Gaza Strip and humanitarian assistance to the region, the White House said.
“The president reiterated the importance of protecting civilians and respecting international humanitarian law as Israel protects its citizens and combats terrorism,” the White House said in a statement.
“The leaders discussed immediate mechanisms to stop the violence, tone down the rhetoric and reduce regional tensions,” the statement said.
“The president and King Abdullah reaffirmed their commitment to working together and with other regional partners to create the conditions for lasting and sustainable peace in the Middle East, including the creation of a Palestinian state,” the White House said.
“The President praised the King for Jordan’s role in promoting regional stability, reiterated Jordan’s critical ally, and reaffirmed the United States’ continued support for Jordan and His Majesty,” the White House statement said.
The parties also agreed that “it is critical to ensure that Palestinians are not forcibly displaced out of Gaza,” according to the White House statement.
