President Joe Biden is actively involved in Senate negotiations over changes to the immigration system that Republicans are demanding in exchange for money for Ukraine and Israel.
Biden has said he is willing to make “major commitments at the border” to meet Republican demands to tie foreign aid to a review of U.S. border security policies.
Among the topics discussed were asylum rules, visa-free entry into the United States on humanitarian grounds (so-called humanitarian parole) and expedited deportation.
Republicans say the record number of migrants crossing the southern border poses a security risk because authorities cannot adequately screen all migrants.
Immigration attorneys say the proposed changes would weaken protections for people who desperately need help.
