The Democratic leadership in Congress criticized the escalation of violence at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington and supported the actions of the police.
On Wednesday night, police clashed with protesters outside the headquarters building, who were demanding a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
The statement was signed by House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, party organizer Catherine Clarke, Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Susan DelBene.
“We are grateful for the service and professionalism of the Capitol Police officers who worked to ensure that House members, staff and visitors were able to leave the building safely. “We strongly support the First Amendment right to free speech and encourage all who exercise this right to do so peacefully,” the Democratic leaders said.
Democrats, including Jeffries, were in the building during the protest. Initially, protesters planned to block exits so that politicians would be forced to view a stand with candles in support of the ceasefire.
Police said the protests quickly turned violent, leaving six officers needing medical treatment for minor injuries. One protester was arrested.
