President Joe Biden offered his condolences to the victims of “another tragic and senseless mass shooting” in Lewiston, Maine, and urged residents in the region to heed warnings and guidance from local authorities.
According to a presidential statement released by the White House, numerous federal law enforcement agents are on the scene and actively working with state and local partners to apprehend suspect Robert Card.
Biden said he has directed the administration to provide everything necessary to support Maine residents.
“We will continue to provide support in everything,” said the president.
“For many Americans who have experienced and been traumatized by gun violence, shootings like this reopen deep and painful wounds,” the president said. – Today, too many Americans have family members killed or injured by gun violence. “This is not normal and we should not tolerate it.”
Biden noted that while progress has been made through the passage of the bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a series of executive orders and the creation of the Office of Gun Violence Prevention, “it is simply not enough.”
“Today, in the wake of yet another tragedy, I call on Republican lawmakers in Congress to do their duty to protect the American people,” the president urged. “We need to pass joint legislation to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, implement universal background checks, require safe gun storage, and end liability immunity for gun manufacturers.”
