First lady Jill Biden will lead a new initiative aimed at boosting the federal government’s research into women’s health, the White House said.
Women make up more than half of the U.S. population, but advocates say they are underrepresented in health research and research on women’s health itself is insufficient.
Biden and other officials have said the goal of the White House Women’s Health Research Initiative is to fundamentally change the government’s approach.
The first lady said the idea for the initiative was raised by former California first lady Maria Shriver at a meeting earlier this year.
According to Jill Biden, she presented the idea to President Joe Biden and he made a decision.
