The Pentagon asked Congress to approve a supplemental budget request sent by President Joe Biden in August to continue meeting Ukraine’s battlefield needs.
This was announced by the deputy press secretary of the Department of Defense, Sabrina Singh.
“The urgency for Congress to approve and approve this package is increasing,” he said. “We are forced to reduce our support for Ukraine.”
The Defense Department has spent 95% of the initial $62.3 billion allocated to support Kiev since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, Singh said.
All Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative funds have been spent, Singh said.
The Pentagon can still remove a small number of weapons from its arsenal with presidential approval, but aid packages for Ukraine are getting smaller, he said.
Singh noted that the next meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group will be held this month, adding that allies and partners, as well as the United States, continue to support Kiev.
