House Republicans on Tuesday nominated Tom Emmer as their candidate for speaker.
This is the third attempt to fill the leadership vacuum that has paralyzed the chamber for three weeks.
Emmer, currently in third place in the House Republican caucus, won the fifth vote. His next test is winning 217 partisan votes as Democrats unite in opposition to his candidacy.
Republicans have already rejected two previous nominations for president after Kevin McCarthy was ousted as president by a small group of Republicans on October 3.
Steve Scalise withdrew his candidacy the following week after failing to get enough votes.
Last week, Republicans chose Jim Jordan as their candidate, but he withdrew after failing in three rounds of voting.
Some lawmakers have said they want to iron out differences after three weeks of infighting. Others say they won’t necessarily support any candidate’s candidacy. Emmer could be a strong candidate for speaker because he has experience in leadership and campaign fundraising.
