U.S. senators from both parties have expressed doubt about House Republicans’ plan to provide $14.3 billion in aid to Israel by cutting funding to the Internal Revenue Service.
Democratic President Joe Biden has threatened to veto the bill, which also does not include aid to Ukraine.
The bill introduced Monday by Republican lawmakers, the first major legislative initiative under new President Mike Johnson, would set aside funds only for Israel.
Earlier, President Joe Biden requested $106 billion for a spending package that includes aid to Israel and Ukraine, as well as money to increase competition with China in the Indo-Pacific region and secure the US border with Mexico. .
Republicans have a majority in the House of Representatives, but Democrats control the Senate. To become law, the bill must be passed by both houses of Congress and signed by Biden.
The Senate Democratic leader said the Republican bill has no chance of passing the upper chamber, even if it passes the House.
“The bottom line is that this is not a serious proposal,” Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer told reporters.
