The United States welcomes the European Council’s decisions on EU enlargement as a powerful endorsement of the European future of EU candidates and potential candidates, the State Department said.
The statement comes after the European Council decided on Thursday to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina, and grant EU candidate status to Georgia.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said the decisions “provide hope and encouragement to these countries and their people to continue the reforms necessary to realize their EU aspirations.”
“This is a historic moment for Europe and the transatlantic partnership,” he added.
“The United States remains a strong supporter of EU enlargement, and we look forward to supporting EU candidates and potential candidates as they continue to implement important reforms on the path to EU membership,” Miller said.
“At this crucial moment for the transatlantic community, we encourage them to seize this opportunity to realize their full democratic and economic potential and secure their future in Europe,” a State Department spokesperson said.
