Last September was the second month in history for the number of arrests of immigrants crossing the US border illegally.
Citizens of Venezuela surpassed other nationalities in the number of arrests, surpassing for the first time in history the number of illegal immigrants-citizens of Mexico. The Border Patrol arrested 54,833 Venezuelans who crossed illegally into the United States from Mexico in September. During the same period, border agents arrested 39,733 Mexicans. This is according to data released over the weekend by US Customs and Border Protection.
The total number of arrests of illegal immigrants of all nationalities entering from Mexico in September was 218,763, up 21% from August (181,084) and approaching the record of 222,018 in December 2022.
Over the last decade, more than 7 million people have been forced to leave Venezuela for economic, political and humanitarian reasons.
Previously, President Joe Biden’s administration recently announced temporary legal status for nearly 500,000 Venezuelans already in the United States as of July 31, while promising to deport those who arrive illegally after that date.
