A year before the next US presidential election, Democrats and abortion rights supporters scored victories in several states on Tuesday.
Ohio Voters Approve Constitutional Amendment Guaranteeing Access to Abortion and Other Forms of Reproductive Health Care
This came after the United States Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade of 1972 that protected the right to abortion.
Ohio was one of several states where abortion bans went into effect as a result of the court’s decision.
Before Ohio, voters in several other states, including California, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana and Vermont, approved initiatives to protect abortion access following last year’s Supreme Court decision.
Democratic Governor Andy Beshear was re-elected in Kentucky. During the campaign, he advocated for exceptions to the state’s near-total ban on abortion.
Virginia voters dashed Republican Gov. Glen Youngkin’s hopes that his party would gain control of the state legislature.
Democrats maintained a fragile majority in the state Senate and regained the majority in the House of Delegates.
